Second phase of Assembly election in west bengal

second phase of the Lok Sabha elections in West Bengal, which took place on April 26, 2024, voters headed to the polls in three constituencies of North Bengal: Darjeeling, Balurghat, and Raiganj. Here are some key points from the election:

Balurghat Constituency:

Voter Turnout: Despite incidents of violence, the voter turnout in Balurghat was noted at 77% until 5 pm.

Candidates: The BJP state president, Sukanta Majumdar, sought re-election from the Balurghat seat, challenging veteran TMC leader and Minister Biplab Mitra.

Darjeeling Constituency:

The Darjeeling hills, known for their long-pending demand for a separate state of Gorkhaland, witnessed a four-cornered contest.

BJP MP Raju Bista contested against party MLA from Kurseong, Bishnu Prasad Sharma, who ran as an independent after his demand to field a “Bhumiputra” was not accepted by the BJP leadership.

The TMC nominated Gopal Lama, supported by Anit Thapa’s Bharatiya Gorkha Prajatantrik Morcha (BGPM), which controls the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA).

Raiganj Constituency:

The BJP fielded Kartick Paul against Trinamool Congress’ Krishna Kalyani, who had earlier been a BJP MLA and switched over to the TMC.

Despite challenges and incidents, voters in West Bengal actively participated in the democratic process during this crucial phase of the elections. 🗳️🇮🇳
