May Day in India

May Day, also known as International Labour Day, is observed in India on May 1st every year. It is a day to honor the contributions and achievements of the working class and to advocate for their rights and welfare. The significance of May Day in India is deeply connected to the international labor movement and the struggle for fair working conditions and rights.

The origins of May Day date back to the late 19th century, with the labor movement in the United States advocating for an eight-hour workday. The Haymarket affair in Chicago in 1886 was a pivotal event that led to the international recognition of May Day as a day of protest for labor rights.

In India, the first May Day celebration took place in Chennai on May 1, 1923, organized by the Labour Kisan Party of Hindustan. Since then, it has been a day to recognize the efforts of workers and to reflect on the progress and ongoing challenges in labor rights.

May Day is celebrated with various events such as parades, marches, and speeches, organized by workers’ unions and left-wing parties. It’s a public holiday in several states, and it’s also a day for spreading awareness about the importance of the labor movement and its history.
